Funny, sad, funny, alarming, funny. Pretty much everything I hoped it would be.

I Got a Haircut

And it’s too short. Now, I must pick up the pieces of my life and move on.

“I’m Not a Magician!”

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Sometimes, a single phrase or quote becomes funnier over time. It’s kind of a best-case-scenario for relationship humor, although the immediately hilarious is also welcome.

Here’s the story. A couple of months ago, John got a bad haircut. And because he doesn’t get his hair cut often, we (I, really) were forced to live with it for some time. Toward the end, I was getting a little triggered by the constant wrong-ness of it. (Don’t hate me). So John gamely suggested we try some “product” (rendered a collective noun by theĀ  hair industry), something he is normally against, to see whether we could improve the look.

Apparently, I had made promises about what product can do. And so had his hair stylist. Which had sparked belief in John. But nearly as soon as I massaged some Rusk Wired into his hair and began to work with it, I saw that nothing good would come of the attempt. His hair just got greasier, and heavier, and lay even flatter, without any more style than it had had before.

I blame multiple factors, including the fact that his hair was dry (and we weren’t using a dryer), but the basic issue was the cut. So as the tension mounted, and I became less and less happy with his hair, and John got more and more plangent, finally I blurted out, “I’m sorry! What do you want me to do? I’m not a magician!”

It was funny at the time. It’s much, much funnier now.
